FAQ

Questions

How is this moon calendar computed?

Every day's phase comes from real ephemeris math (the same lunar position calculations astronomers use), evaluated at noon UTC for that date. Nothing here is a hand-typed table, so it stays accurate for any month you land on.

What do the new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter mean?

They mark the four corners of the lunar cycle: new is fully dark, first quarter is a half-lit moon on the way to full, full is fully lit, and last quarter is a half-lit moon on the way back to dark. The key moments list below gives you the exact date for each this month.

Why do moon phase dates shift every month?

A full lunar cycle runs about 29.5 days, not a clean 30 or 31, so the new moon and full moon land on different dates each month and slowly drift across the calendar year over year.
